FSA/HSA Eligibility for Foot Care: What's Covered & How to Use Your Benefits
Share
Don't Let Your FSA/HSA Benefits Go to Waste
Millions of Americans leave FSA (Flexible Spending Account) and HSA (Health Savings Account) dollars on the table every year — especially toward year-end when FSA funds are about to expire. If you have foot pain, need orthotics, or are overdue for supportive footwear, your pre-tax benefits may cover more than you think.
As a Certified Pedorthist, I help patients navigate FSA/HSA eligibility regularly. Here's a practical guide to what's covered and how to use your benefits at Ortho-Core.
FSA vs. HSA: What's the Difference?
Both accounts let you set aside pre-tax dollars for qualified medical expenses, but they work differently:
- FSA (Flexible Spending Account) — Employer-sponsored. Funds are available upfront but typically expire at year-end (some plans allow a grace period or limited rollover). Use it or lose it.
- HSA (Health Savings Account) — Paired with a high-deductible health plan (HDHP). Funds roll over indefinitely and can even be invested. Much more flexible long-term.
Both can be used for the same categories of eligible foot care products and services.
What Foot Care Products Are FSA/HSA Eligible?
Eligibility is determined by the IRS and generally requires that the product or service treat, diagnose, or prevent a medical condition. Here's how common foot care items break down:
✅ Typically Eligible
- Custom orthotics — Almost always eligible, especially with a prescription or letter of medical necessity from a physician or Certified Pedorthist. Our Custom Molded Orthotics qualify in most cases.
- OTC orthotic insoles — Eligible when purchased to treat a specific medical condition (e.g., plantar fasciitis, flat feet). The Medi Insoles Plantar Fasciitis Pro is a strong example.
- Diabetic footwear — Shoes and inserts prescribed for diabetic patients are FSA/HSA eligible and may also be covered by Medicare Part B.
- Compression socks/stockings — Eligible when prescribed for a medical condition such as edema, varicose veins, or post-surgical recovery.
- Gait analysis and pedorthic consultations — Professional assessments for foot conditions are generally eligible as medical services.
⚠️ Sometimes Eligible (Condition-Dependent)
- Supportive footwear — Standard shoes are not eligible, but therapeutic or diabetic shoes prescribed for a medical condition may be. Ask your provider.
- General wellness insoles — If purchased purely for comfort without a diagnosed condition, these may not qualify. Documentation helps.
❌ Generally Not Eligible
- Athletic shoes purchased for general fitness
- Cosmetic foot treatments
- General comfort products without a medical purpose
How to Use Your FSA/HSA at Ortho-Core
Using your benefits is straightforward:
- Shop our FSA/HSA Eligible Products collection — We've curated the products most likely to qualify so you can shop with confidence.
- Pay with your FSA/HSA card — Most FSA/HSA debit cards work like a regular card at checkout. Simply select it as your payment method.
- Save your receipt — Keep your order confirmation as documentation in case your plan administrator requests it.
- Get a Letter of Medical Necessity if needed — For custom orthotics or higher-cost items, a letter from your doctor or our Certified Pedorthist can strengthen your claim. Contact us and we'll help facilitate this.
Year-End FSA Deadline: Act Before You Lose It
If you have an FSA, check your balance now. Most FSA plans run on a calendar year, meaning unused funds expire on December 31st (or shortly after, depending on your plan's grace period). Custom orthotics, insoles, and compression products are all smart ways to put those dollars to work on your health.
